Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should I wear to class?

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Smooth-soled shoes are ideal (leather or suede is great), but you can also just dance in your socks! Please note: you won’t be able to wear street shoes or sneakers on the dance floor as they make it challenging to pivot.

  • Do I need a partner to join?

Not at all! Many students come solo. We rotate partners in class so everyone gets a chance to dance and learn together.

  • If we are a couple, do we have to rotate partners?

Not at all — partner rotation is optional. If you prefer to dance only with each other during class, that’s totally fine. We want you to feel comfortable and enjoy your experience.

  • I’ve never danced before… is that okay?

Yes! Our beginner classes are designed for absolute first-timers, even if you’ve never danced a day in your life. No experience needed, just a willingness to try something new!

  • How long are the classes?

Beginner and Intermediate classes are 55 minutes long. Private lessons are 1 hour. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before class to get settled.

  • How many people are in group classes?

Group classes typically have between 5 to 15 students, but we can accommodate up to 20. We keep things friendly and spacious so everyone gets personal attention and room to dance.

  • How much do classes cost?

Group classes are $15 per person. You must pay before class starts either with cash or by Venmo. Private lessons are $60 per hour.

  • What’s the difference between the beginner and intermediate classes?

Beginner classes cover the fundamentals: posture, connection, and how to walk. We recommend taking at least four beginner classes before trying out intermediate. Intermediate classes are for those comfortable with the basics and ready to explore new techniques, musicality, and improvisation.

  • How do I sign up for a group class?

No need to register in advance for group classes — just show up a few minutes early. For private lessons, please message us on instagram @yukiaarontango

  • What is a práctica?

A práctica is an informal space to practice what you’ve learned in class (usually for about 2-3 hours)I There’s music playing and people dancing, but the atmosphere is relaxed — you can stop to ask questions, try things out, or repeat steps at your own pace. It’s a great bridge between class and social dancing. There is a regularly held práctica at the 418 Project in Downtown Santa Cruz.

  • What is a milonga?

A milonga is a social dance event where people gather to dance Argentine Tango. Unlike a group class or práctica, a milonga is all about dressing up nicely, socializing, and dancing with different partners. It can be challenging, but it is the traditional way to enjoy tango.

  • What makes Argentine Tango different from other kinds of dance?

Argentine Tango is all about connection, improvisation, and musicality. Unlike ballroom tango, it is about connection and improvisation — less about memorized/synchronized steps and more about listening to your partner and the music.
